An Inn was located at the junctions of Routes 7 and 71 as early as 1765. After a fire, a second Inn was built facing Route 71, and, in 1791, President George Washington stopped here at the sign of the Red Lyon en route to Mount Vernon.
An old tavern also used as a dwelling was located on the west side of Market Street at Twenty-third Street, and torn down in 1931; its name had been Village Inn and Green Tree Tavern.
The Silver family inherited the Red Lyon Inn property and closed it in 1837 when the present Railroad was diverted from the town. He was Postmaster and opened a store.
