Title
Using
band
saws
to
cut
Lucite
Folder
Fabrication of Lucite Products
Description
Band
saws
are
often
used
for
cutting
curves
of
large
radius
in
Lucite
methyl
methacrylate
resin
.
Because
of the
length
of
band
saw
blades
, they
dissipate
heat
more
rapidly
than
do
circular
saws
.
Accordingly
, they
operate
at
lower
temperatures
and are
better
suited
to
cutting
thick
sheets
.
Wide
blades
,
being
more
rigid
, are
suited
for
long
straight
cuts
.
Narrow
blades
are
required
for
cutting
curves
.
Tooth
size
should
become
coarse
with
progressive
increase
in
thickness
of the
material
being
cut
. A
range
of from
8
to
22
teeth
per
inch
is
commonly
employed
. For
continuous
heavy
work
,
one
inch
or
more
in
thickness
,
22
or
23
gauge
blade
is
recommended
. On
lighter
work
, a
26
or
28
gauge
blade
will
give
good
results
. A
range
of
speeds
from
1000
to
1500
feet
per
minute
is
suggested
.
Saw
guides
should be
adjusted
as
closely
to the
work
as
possible
.
Water
can
be
used
as a
lubricant
for
thick
cuts
to
prevent
smoking
,
chipping
and
binding
or
sticking
.
Blades
should be
cleaned
periodically
by
soaking
them in
toluene
or
some
other
suitable
solvent
to
remove
gummy
deposits
.
Masking
paper
is
usually
left
intact
as
shown
, to
protect
the
polished
surface
of the
plastic
from
abrasion
during
the
fabrication
of
light
weight
,
transparent
aircraft
enclosures
.
